One of my superpowers is an extraordinary imagination. I can visualize an elaborate project without much effort. What I typically do not see immediately in my creative pursuits is the numerous – and often mind-numbing – details that accompany such intricate projects. The compounded complications that inevitably reveal themselves… unfolding one at a time… like a series of challenges only there to test my resolve. Some hurdles turn out to be more severe than others, occasionally causing me to rethink the design altogether. Others can be fixed with a quick decision. My enthusiasm for bringing this endeavor to fruition has been questioned nearly every day. But I am still here… working harder than ever.
In my new clothing business, I am starting from scratch; with only the inspired ideas I have dreamed up while walking. I am experiencing many successes and failures that sometimes seem indistinguishable. Who knew that clothing designs were subject to the whims of pesky laws pertaining to physics and mathematics? (Well, obviously, everyone else knew, but who’s counting?) I enjoy dreaming up various pockets big enough to hold things we would actually carry with us on a walk… while at the same time retaining the shape of the garment with pockets full of said treasures.
I knew these issues were legitimate, but I still find myself dumbstruck by their repeated and sudden appearance. I have been searching for superior tailors specializing in the clothing I design and have discovered some genuinely talented master tailors. It is satisfying beyond comprehension to behold a professionally-made article of clothing that was once merely a far-fetched idea.
The biggest challenge by far has been finding the perfect fabric. I had a difficult time finding what I wanted in the U.S., as well as here, in various parts of India. The plethora of gorgeous silks and cotton has me “ooohing and aaahing” over all the vibrant colors, patterns, and textures of material India is known for. But alas, these are not the technical fabrics that are required and commonly found in outdoor-specific clothing. My search continues as I prepare for my journey to Kathmandu, Nepal, in the coming days.
Despite all the trials, I am excited to share that I have successfully created a line of comfortable, stretchy traveling clothes – pants, leggings, skirts, and tops- all with numerous hidden pockets for hands-free walking. This has been such a fantastic learning experience! But, as they say, the learning curve is steep… but totally worth it! I look forward to sharing this FUNctional clothing with the world soon!
