I walk by these trees frequently and always find myself confused at the thought of someone… anyone… ALL of these people… doing this. It breaks my heart because this tree will most likely not live very long.  The damage has been done. All I can do is say a prayer for this beautiful being and continue to share the importance of Leave No Trace.
Tree carving falls under the Leave No Trace Principle #4: Leave What You Find.

Carving anything into the bark of a tree, while it may seem harmless, has significant ecological and environmental repercussions. Tree bark serves as a protective layer for the tree, shielding it from pests, diseases, and harsh weather conditions. Cutting into the bark compromises this protective barrier, making the tree more susceptible to infections and structural damage.

Trees efficiently transport water and nutrients through the inner layers of their bark, and breaching the surface disrupts vital processes, hindering the tree’s health. Trees play a crucial role in supporting diverse ecosystems, and their bark serves as a habitat for a variety of organisms. Carving into the bark disrupts this microenvironment, impacting the biodiversity in the area.

Besides being an undesirable disruption of a pristine landscape, carved markings diminish the natural beauty of trees, altering and detracting from their appearance. By choosing to be a Keeper of the Land, you are respecting and supporting the Earth and all her inhabitants.
