Have you ever slowly approached another vehicle on an interstate because they were driving slower than you, and when you began to pass them, they sped up? Now, you find yourself going uncomfortably fast to finish passing them. I’ve noticed this is a fairly common pattern, and it used to really frustrate me. Once upon a time, I believed they were intentionally trying to stay ahead of me or prevent me from passing, even though they had been driving slower.

Earlier, when this happened, I realized they probably didn’t even know they were doing that. It was just an involuntary default reaction from living in fear. We inherently want to “get ahead.” Sometimes literally, even if it is an unconscious behavior. Some have naturally competitive predispositions, often conditioned as children. This habitual survival instinct can be significantly felt in densely populated areas. The confirmation is the chaotic, aggressive energy we feel while driving through large cities. Arriving with kindness in your heart helps neutralize this energy for yourself and others.

We are energetic beings emitting a powerful electromagnetic field. Put us all in a room together, and it is genuinely palpable. The most joyful example is a circle of women creating a safe container for healing and deep connection. You can feel the uplifting energy of the sacred space. The other side of this mysterious phenomenon can be unconscious, discourteous driving habits. Our energy communicates who we are and what our intention is. We are screaming out to the world who we are in every moment without saying a word.

These days, if a driver speeds up, making it difficult to pass., or abruptly pulls out in front of me, I say, “I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you.” This is the Hawaiian prayer Ho’opono pono… sending forgiveness and compassion into the world. Our outer world is a reflection of our inner world. Impolite drivers are simply running from the chaos within.

Send them love. Send them forgiveness.

Be peace, and you’ll help spread peace. Good stuff spreads too.
