WildWoodWear Part II:

I had dreamed of owning a sewing machine for as long as I could remember. My mother was chomping at the bit to buy me one for a birthday or Christmas gift, but I always told her, “It’s not quite time… yet.” I knew I wouldn’t use it until I had a suitable space, and the novelty clothes-designing magic would wear off and be one more thing on my “to-do” list, ruining it for me forever. Well, one day in the middle of 2019, it happened.

My sweet boyfriend at the time bought me one. I am pretty sure he was tired of hearing me talk incessantly about the things I wanted to design and sew. But as it turned out, it was one of the best gifts ever. I was more excited than ever, and finally, the creating began. So, I started watching YouTube videos and, fairly quickly, figured out how to operate my new Singer sewing machine.

For many years, I dreamed of making skirts with lots of pockets. You know, so you can go out dancing… or for a short walk… and not have to carry a purse? So, of course, the first thing I sewed after figuring out how to thread the thing was a skirt with pockets. Without a pattern. I just started sewing shit together. And I’ll be damned if it didn’t turn out alright! Well, it was ok- but don’t go looking where the thing is stitched together, for goodness’ sake. It’s white and is made of linen-like cotton (that I had saved for so long it’s actually slightly yellowish in color, but who’s counting.) However, I wear it to this day while walking on the beach. You know… because it has pockets! But that was only the beginning…

The creating continued, and I got better… much better! In fact, I opened an Etsy store called WildWoodWear with my fanciful, artistic creations. I only sold a few because I had to price them so high. Besides all the expensive materials, zippers, and other miscellaneous parts of a kickass skirt, I had upwards of like 50-70 hours of work into each one of them! They may be beautiful, but speedy and efficient, I was not.

So, now I am going about this differently. I am going to meet the professionals. The ones that know how to make actual patterns and produce stitching I can be proud to show off. Although my dream is to have them made right here in my own little studio, the prototypes are being made (and tested) elsewhere. And the whole amazing venture is coming together like a true-to-life fairytale, just as I have always dreamed. WildWoodWear lives on, and I am officially starting a new company and hiring a magical team to make it happen…

Stay tuned for the unfolding enchanted fairytale of WildWoodWear!
