Walking as a Sacred Path…
Have you heard the phrase “Hike your own hike?” It is one of those phrases that make a lot of sense when you first hear it, and then it becomes commonplace or even a little annoying. Regardless of its’ triggering factor, the message is spot on… Whether you are casually strolling through a park or breaking your daily mileage record on rugged terrain, whatever way you feel called to move is precisely perfect.
When we plan our walking adventures with ample time to fulfill all we want to experience, we are harmonious and moving within the natural flow. Walking at the speed and fashion one desires is an ongoing relationship between our bodies and the earth beneath our feet. But, like all relationships, this one changes and evolves, too.
I was once a speed hiker. I would amaze others on hiking trips with my ability to quickly climb to the top of steep mountains. I was an obsessive exerciser, and my primary focus then was burning calories and counting miles. Now, I can see my perspective on hiking in nature was quite limited in those days. It would be several years before I realized the many magical gifts that walking with intention (at any speed or duration) can bring.
Thankfully, I still have the capacity to hike quickly if I need to, but I plan my hikes with plenty of time to simply meander peacefully. I sometimes wander without attachment to a particular destination at all… and walk in wonderment to wherever the path leads me.
Whether you’re new to a regular walking practice or a seasoned long-distance hiker, there is always a new way of looking at things. There is nothing wrong with hiking fast… or slowly… it is to each his own. When you practice being completely present in nature and tuned in to all that is happening around you… you are one with All That Is… as if you are a moving prayer.
Time slows down, and there is nothing but right now.
This is Walking as a Sacred Path…
