The “Leave No Trace” Center for Outdoor Ethics has a mission to protect the outdoors by educating and inspiring people to enjoy it responsibly. Leave No Trace (LNT) promotes low-impact recreation and ethical outdoor skills. They bring awareness of the negative consequences of how we love our outdoor spaces, literally to death. The seven principles of LNT are applicable in the frontcountry as well as the backcountry. They are now a standard for almost every outdoor affiliated organization and have been adopted by public land management.
My soon-to-be-published-book, WildWood Magic: A Guide to Walking as a Sacred Practice, has a whole chapter dedicated to hiking etiquette and thoroughly discusses the importance of being a good environmental steward, a Keeper of the Land. We are ALL responsible for caring for the outdoor places we hold dear to our hearts.
The 7 Leave No Trace Principles:
1. Plan ahead and prepare
2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces
3. Dispose of waste properly
4. Leave what you find
5. Minimize fire impact
6. Respect Wildlife
7. Be considerate of other visitors
Stay tuned for more upcoming videos about each of the Leave No Trace Principles.
