On Earth Day (this Friday, April 22nd), many think of groups coming together to clean up trails, pick up trash along the roadside, and participate in a myriad of other environmental service projects. (Yay!! Thank you!) This is a truly fabulous way to celebrate Mother Earth and the infinite blessings we receive living upon her. However, if this type of thing is not in your Earth Day plans, perhaps there are other ways to acknowledge our sacred planet. Simply having the intention to honor the Earth by spending time in nature is a grand way to send and receive love and healing.
This Friday, I will be wandering about in the woods, taking in all the sounds, smells, and bountiful Spring blooms that greet us this time of year. My walk will be honoring my late aunt… my elder, and my greatest teacher, Ahnaha WhiteFeather. Some knew her as Ahna Logan, and others as Anne. But ALL knew her as a celebrated devotee to Mother Earth. It never ceases to amaze me how magically apropos it is that her birthday fell on Earth Day.
No one embodied unconditional love for the Earth more than Ahna. Her delight in seeing a turtle swimming across the pond or a frog making its way up her bedroom window was just as profound an experience as if she had seen a unicorn walk by. I have always said she taught me all my magic. And I wholly understand what that means to me as I sit here by this exquisite, gurgling creek. For listening to her speak, all those years, with such deep gratitude and respect for all of nature, planted a powerful seed whose roots have grown mighty.
I am inspired to utter silence by the beauty of nature. Any nature. All nature. The infinite wisdom and precise perfection of the mystical workings of our planet often leaves me speechless.
This Earth Day, honor Mother Earth and yourself by taking some time to be in nature. Send your gratitude and appreciation to the soil below your feet. Raise your arms in the air and feel the love shining upon your face. Smell the scent of all things growing and blooming. You are surrounded by great beauty mirroring that which resides within.
Happy Earth Day
Happy birthday, Ahna.
I love you!
