Who is this for?
Designed for newbies who are ready to take their hiking and backpacking understanding to a new level. This course is taught in small groups to dive deep into the right skills for you to become a knowledgeable backpacker. We will have detailed demos and discussions about different styles of gear, from comfort to ultralight, so you are familiar with common systems and are able to make qualified decisions about your own gear purchases in the future.
Topics covered:
- Cooking: We will have a fun, backcountry food-prep class and assemble delicious backpacking meals, for your particular diet (vegan, gluten-free, sugar-free?). Learn healthy ways to eat yummy food while out in the wild using 5 different types of backpacking stoves with 5 different types of fuels
- Shelter: We will demo 4 different types of shelters including tarps, tents, hammocks, hybrids
- Water Purification: You will learn 4 different methods of safe water treatment and all the pros and cons
- Backpacks and Accessories: You will learn all about different types, features, and how to fit a pack properly!
- Sleeping Bags, Quilts, Liners, and Pads: The ins and outs of all the different types of sleeping equipment
- Clothing: Everything you need to know about clothing to stay comfortable, warm, safe and dry
- Feet and shoes: Everything you need to know about the most important body part when it comes to hiking
- Detailed discussions addressing: Fears, awareness, mindset, organization, & “Leave No Trace” Principles
- Personal Hygiene and feminine related issues: Everything you need to know about staying clean and healthy
Held in a large outdoor pavilion. The event will run, rain or shine. See you then!
