Welcome to the Leave No Trace Video Series.  Today we’re discussing Principle #5: Minimize Campfire Impact

If you really want to Leave No Trace, use a camp stove instead of building a fire.  But, for some, having a campfire is an essential part of being outside.  So, where campfires are permitted and safe, there are some primary things to consider: What’s the fire danger for the time of year where you are?  Is it very dry? Windy?

Always practice the Four D’s: Dead, Downed, Distant & Dinky

When gathering firewood, only choose dead and downed wood from as far away from your campsite as possible.  Collect wood that is smaller than your wrist. Please keep in mind that dead and downed wood is also an essential habitat for insects and other little creatures, a central food source for many birds and animals, so the smaller, the better.

Thank you for being a good Keeper of the Land!
