What can you expect?
- A fun, hands-on learning experience resulting in a thorough understanding of the pros and cons of different types of backpacking gear- from ultralight to luxury hiking- and everything in between

- An intimate experience (1-4 women max), so that your specific issues and concerns are covered in detail…something that usually doesn’t happen in large group environments
- An all-inclusive program… All accommodations, all meals and snacks, all backpacking gear for demonstration, as well as for use on our backpacking trip, all backpacking food, and fuel are included

This 7-day Intensive Program is the culmination of 22+ years of the trials and errors of backcountry experience, long-distance hiking, and extensive training.
Who is this for?
Designed for those who are ready to take your love of nature to a whole new level, whether you are a total hiking newbie or have spent a night or two in the woods. This course is taught one-on-one and in very small groups (1 – 4 max) to dive deep into the right skills for YOU to become a competent backpacker and practice the skills you most want to learn. You will have access to different kinds of gear, from luxury-comfort to ultralight, so you can experiment with common systems and can make qualified decisions about equipment.
On day four, we will pack for a two-night/three-day backpacking trip together, choosing the gear you most want to experiment with on the trail, and I will be there with you to make sure you know how to operate and implement everything correctly. You will be ready to go out on your own, if you wish, by the end of this transformational experience, completely self-assured, prepared, and a confident Backpacker. Guaranteed.
How does it work?
We will have seven days/six nights of experiential Backpacking as a Sacred Practice training together. Four nights will be spent in a well-appointed lodge while taking day-hikes to beautiful locations to demonstrate various types of hiking equipment in the field, detailed discussions, as well as a variety of meditations and rituals. Together we will prepare for a three-day/two-night backpacking trip, using all your newly enhanced backpacking skills and your new favorite gear. On the last night, we will have a magical Fire Ceremony to celebrate your transformational accomplishment!
Course Curriculum:
- Walking as a Sacred Path: A Wellness Practice that inspires presence and awareness, so we may catch a glimpse into the whimsical, playful side of nature. Nature’s magic is indeed alive and inviting us to come out and play….
- Cooking: Learn to be comfortable using five different types of backpacking stoves with five different kinds of fuels
- ..Backcountry Cooking Experiences: We will have fun, food-prep classes to create and test delicious backpacking meals for your particular diet (vegan, gluten-free, sugar-free, etc.).
- Shelter: We will set up and use four different types of shelters, including tarps, tents, hammocks, hybrids
- Water Purification: You will learn four different methods of safe water treatment and all the pros and cons of each
- Backpacks and Accessories: You will learn about different types of packs, features, and how to fit a pack properly
- Sleeping Bags, Quilts, Liners, and Pads: Learn the pros and cons of the different styles of sleeping systems
- Clothing: Everything you need to know about clothing to stay comfortable, warm, safe, and dry
- Feet and shoes: Everything you need to know about this essential body part when it comes to hiking
- Detailed discussions and activities addressing: Fears, awareness, mindset, organization, & “Leave No Trace” Principles
- Personal Hygiene and Feminine related issues: Everything you need to know about staying clean, healthy & comfortable
- First-Aid, Safety, Fire building, Throwing a Bear Line, Basic Trail Navigation, Organization, and much, much more…
